Los Angeles Harbor Art was founded in 1995 by a group of local artists who wanted to create a space where they could showcase their work and connect with other artists in the area. Over the years, the gallery has grown into a vibrant community of creatives, with regular exhibitions, artist talks, and workshops.
I do photo-based collages, along with straight photography. In terms of photography, what I find interesting are the myriad of tiny moments around us all of the time which, often busily engaged in our own personal monologue, dialogue, or multilogue with ourselves within our own skulls, we can so easily miss. I think that life is lived best in these small instants and much of my photography contains the record of the moments that have surprised me with their abrupt vivacities.
For over 30 years as a sculptor and collector, I’ve dedicated myself to exploring the relationship between art, design, nature, and architecture. As an alum of Alfred University, I started creating art with clay and metal, showcasing my work in galleries and design showrooms worldwide. Most recently at Altasea and House 1002, I merge design, materials and vintage treasures together to create new works. Now, I’m thrilled to embark on an exciting new project— the creation of the new Bone Yard at Alta Sea.
I consider myself to be primarily a landscape painter. I paint landscapes of Coastal California, as well as scenes from my travels throughout California and the Southwest. As a third generation California native, I have enjoyed beach trips, back-packing and camping since I was a child. In this increasingly chaotic world, I feel that getting back to nature restores sanity and serenity and that is what I try to bring to my artwork. Oil paint is currently my primary medium, since I love its richness and intensity, but I also use soft pastel, another rich and intense medium. I begin a painting by selecting a subject that excites me. My goal is to paint expressively, yet maintain a sense of realism, and to convey my deep appreciation of the beauty of nature. My goal in painting outdoors is to capture the ever-changing light and deepening shadows, and my studio work builds on the knowledge of nature's colors learned from observing and painting outside.

Mixed-media works on paper and sculpture exploring process. Much of his nonrepresentational and abstract work grows out of his experiences and nature. Vanessa Madrid Studio
As a multidisciplinary artist, I create work that responds to the natural world, memory and the body. My themes are inspired by the dynamics of energy flow, vibration and the physics of resonance. I’m interested in energy rooted in, around, and between places, objects and living beings. Edges are important, places between outer and inner, boundaries and borders. These liminal spaces are where the magic is. I look to the in-between stages of energetic shifts for inspiration. My practice includes painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. I use the language of abstraction to avoid singular interpretations. Curiosity and direct observation are essential starting points to every piece. I work intuitively, choosing materials that feel authentic to each piece. I try different colors and shapes, changing position, sizes, and textures until the piece reflects some part of what is there, or what is not there. The design process of stripping away, leaving only essential elements, is at the core of my practice. IG: @vanessamadridstudio

My goal is to create stories that elicit an emotional attraction or repulsion. Images that appear specific to the viewer’s but for each viewer, the story differs. The current series blends my love of renaissance still life paintings with Japanese Rope Bondage (Shibari / Kinbaku-bi). Replacing the animals with people in these images is used to change the expectation of this genre. This is not “animal rights” but a comment on wasteful consumption and unmitigated destruction of our environments and the once was bounty of this planet. In a parallel series, shibari is used to create the human body as a vase. This is to carry Mapplethorpe’s Flowers further and intersecting with bondage as a fine art. IG: @rlsfoto
